Started in 1985
The Finnish Computer Museum is located in Jyväskylä and has been operating for 40 years. Its operations are managed by the Finnish Computer Museum Association, a non-profit association. The museum has no paid staff, all work is done on a voluntary basis. The museum also has no significant sources of income, its operations are made possible by various grants and donations. The association’s activities involve current and retired IT professionals.
A warehouse exhibition is open on Thursdays from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM in Vaajakoski, Kanavuori. We organize guided tours for groups by appointment
A smaller exhibition on the history of information technology is on display at the University of Jyväskylä. The exhibition can be found on the second floor of the C-wing of the Agora building and admission is free during the building’s opening hours. The exhibition opens up a time travel journey into the development of information technology over several decades and provides a concrete illustration of where things started and how development has progressed to the present day.
The exhibition is compiled from the collections of the Finnish Computer Museum and presents information technology by subject area, such as punched cards, memories, hard drives, data storage, laptops, PDAs, PCs, etc.
The museum association collects and stores equipment and other materials related to computer processing. It maintains knowledge of the history of the IT industry and cherishes a unique computer collection from the early years of computer processing to the present day. The most significant items in the collection are punch card machines and large mainframe computers from the 1960s and 1970s.
We cooperate with the Museum of Technology, the Central Finland Museum, the University of Jyväskylä, the City of Jyväskylä and Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences. The museum’s collection is recognized as being of cultural and historical significance.
